Please note that you can all vote this Saturday!
But hey, where's the Ulster-Scots entry?
1st Celtic and Scots Minority Languages Competition
The first Celtic and Scots Minority Languages Song Competition will be held in Inverness on 21 June 2008 as part of four regional finals held across Europe .
The event is called Nòs Ùr which means ‘New Style' in Scottish Gaelic, and languages expected to be entered into the competition are Scottish Gaelic, Scots, Ulster Scots, Irish, Manx, Welsh, Cornish and Breton.
The winner of the West European competition will be entered into the final of the pan-European ‘Liet Lavlut' competition which will take place in Lulea Sweden next October. Judges will be invited from each of the minority languages expected to enter the event; Scots, Scottish Gaelic, Ulster Scots, Irish, Manx, Welsh, Cornish, Breton.
There will be two winners who will go through to the Liet Lavlut event; one will be chosen on the night by a public vote using mobile phone sms texting. The other will be chosen by a jury made up of members from the various language groups involved.
The contest is the only song competition of its kind in Europe and follows a similar format as the Eurovision Song Contest with singers and bands representing a particular country or in this case a minority language.
By gathering interest from singers from minority languages communities, the competition aims to promote the cultural and musical diversity to a large international audience. There has been considerable print and broadcast media interest in previous regional and pan-European competitions. This has benefited the profile and economy of the local area hosting the event.
Event organiser and Inverness-based musician/arts consultant Brian Ó hEadhra will manage the project for goEvents who work in the promotion and development of the creative industries in the Highlands and Island of Scotland .
The UHI Millennium Institute will be a partner organisation and hold an academic conference on the same day as the competition. This conference is called "Voices of the West", and will star Lesley Riddoch and J Derrick McClure among others.
There will be a Civic Reception hosted by the Highland Council for artists, jury and academics attending the event at the Inverness Town House on Friday 20 June 2008.
Sponsors of the event include: Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Highland Council, Colmcille, Scottish Arts Council, Gaelic Media Services, UHI Millennium Institute.
Aims and Objectives :
Foster new writing in indigenous languages
Develop links and dialogue between artists and related creative industries within Western Europe
Encourage and increase cultural tourism where the event takes place
Promote and encourage the use of indigenous minority languages
Strengthen the image and self worth of minority language speakers
Provide economic opportunities and development for artistes and creative industries.
Promote the region to a wide audience through media and public/private sector interest.
